Lionsgate Drops ‘Spiral: From the Book of Saw’ Teaser Trailer
Last May, news broke that actor/comedian Chris Rock had submitted his story for a new entry in Lionsgate’s long-running Saw franchise and that the project was green-lit shortly thereafter. Since then very little has been revealed about the plot, only that the new film would not be a “reboot“, but that it would have its place in the timeline of the previous eight films. We learned that the script was to be provided by Jigsaw screenwriters Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, and that Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II-IV) would be returning to the director’s chair. It was later revealed that Samuel L. Jackson had been cast in in the film as the father of Rock’s character. Also of interest to Saw fans was the development that Charlie Clouser would once again provide a variation of his “Hello Zepp” score.
The ninth Saw film, which went into production under the working title The Organ Donor, completed filming in August 2019. In recent days, the movie’s actual title was rumored across the internet to be Spiral: From the Book of Saw. This was confirmed today with the release of the first teaser trailer and official movie poster. The title indicates a spin-off of the Saw series, rather than a reboot or direct sequel. While plot details remain mostly under wraps, the new trailer suggests a brand new killer who seems motivated to target the police. At this time, there is no indication that any of the characters from previous entries will be returning for this latest installment (including Tobin Bell’s John Kramer aka “Jigsaw”). This is Saw however, a series of films that has been known for its many twists and surprises.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw will be released theatrically in the US on May 15, 2020.
Here is the plot synopsis as we know it so far:
A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.
